Dr. Alfredo García Layana
Director of the Department of Ophthalmology
Preferential dedication to the study and treatment of vitreoretinal diseases, macular pathology such as age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and great myopia as well as cataract surgery.
Professional career
Degree in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Navarra (1987). Doctor of Medicine from the University of Valladolid (1993). Title of Family Doctor by the Ministry of Health and Consumption (1994) and Ophthalmology by the University of Valladolid (1993).
He has made stays of specialization and improvement in diseases of the macula, vitreous and retina at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary of Boston (trauma and tumors), at the Ophthalmic Consultants of Boston (macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy), at the New York Presbyterian Hospital of Columbia University (Vitreoretinal Surgery), at the Mount Sinai Hospital (posterior uveitis), and at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Hospital in New York (intraocular tumors).
RESEARCH AREAS
- Principal Investigator of 22 competitive Research Projects (14 National Public Competitive Projects and 1 European Project FP7 Target-AMD pioneer worldwide in gene therapy in age-related macular degeneration with transposons) and 56 Clinical Trials.
- One Patent in commercial exploitation (Method for the prediction of the risk of developing Age-Related Macular Degeneration disease in Spanish population).
- Founder of the Laboratory of Experimental Ophthalmology of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Navarra; in 2004. Currently; Clinical Director of this laboratory having managed to create a multidisciplinary work team of 9 people (4 postdoctoral; 3 graduates and 2 laboratory technicians) completely self-funded through competitive research projects (public and private) and research contracts.
- Coherent research line in retinal diseases; with special attention to Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD).
AREAS OF INTEREST
- Vitreoretinal diseases, macular pathology such as age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and myopia magna.
- He has been performing vitreoretinal surgeries such as retinal detachments, epiretinal membranes and macular holes for more than 20 years.
- He also treats eyeball tumors such as melanomas and posterior uveitis.

- Full Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Navarra (2007-2019.)
- Five Sexenios of Research recognized by the CNEAI National Commission for the Evaluation of Research Activity: (1992-1998/1999-2004/2005-2010/2011-2016/2017-2022).
- Director of 17 doctoral theses (five of which have received national awards for the best doctoral thesis). Member of 30 doctoral thesis tribunals in 8 different national universities.
- Author /Co-author of 13 books and 38 book chapters; including six works of original teaching material.

- Author of more than 166 scientific publications. He has given more than 436 communications to congresses, national and international invited talks, presentations in courses and seminars
- Principal investigator of the project Inflammation and immunopathology of organs and systems (RD21/0002/0010). Funded by the Instituto de Salud Carlos III. Redes de Investigación Cooperativa Orientadas a Resultados en Salud (RICORS); of the call 2021 of the Acción Estratégica en Salud 2017-2020. Evaluator of the journal Archivos de la Sociedad Española de Oftalmología since January 1997. Evaluator of the International Journals Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science, and Ophthalmology. Evaluator of the National Agency of Evaluation and Prospective of the Ministry of Education and Culture.
- Member of the Scientific Committee of the Journal of Medicine of the University of Navarra. Since January 1998.
- Director of the "Curso De Retina" from 2002 to 2019, organized by the Department of Ophthalmology of the Clínica Universidad de Navarra, in Pamplona.

- President of the Spanish Retina and Vitreous Society (SERV) since March 2023, having previously held the positions of: Vice-President (2019-2023), Secretary General (2015-2018) and Treasurer (2011-2014).
- Secretary of the RETINA-PLUS Foundation (since 2015); having previously held the position of Treasurer (2011-2014).
- Member of the Research Committee of the Clínica Universidad de Navarra.
