Endovascular embolisation of the ovarian veins has become a well established treatment of female pelvic venous disease (PVD);1,2 however, some concerns remain unresolved. First, the use of multiple permanent implants, such as alloy or metal coils, in a very young population; and second, the challenges of imaging evaluation in the event of a recurrence due to the related artifact of previously used embolic agents.

This preliminary study was designed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of a novel approach based on the use of a single shape memory polymer plug as the embolising agent (Impede-Fx, Shape Memory Medical, Santa Clara, CA, USA) and its application in PVD. Its porous embolic scaffold, which expands on contact with blood, supports the acute formation of thrombus and leads to advanced healing into mature connective tissue.3
