Blepharoplasty
"This is a relatively simple operation with very favorable and lasting results. In addition, the scar is hidden in the crease of the upper eyelid".
DR. BERNARDO HONTANILLA CALATAYUD SCIENTIFIC DIRECTOR. RESTORATIVE AND PLASTIC SURGERY DEPARTMENT
What is blepharoplasty?
Aesthetic blepharoplasty aims to remove fat and excess skin and muscle from the upper and lower eyelids, in order to correct the effects of facial aging.
Among these effects are the sagging of the skin of the upper eyelids, as well as the presence of bags in the lower and inside of the upper eyelids.
Blepharoplasty can correct the drooping of the upper lids and the bags in the lower ones, characteristics that make us look older and more tired than we are and that, in some cases, can interfere with vision.
The intervention achieves a result aesthetically favorable and durable, since, usually, the bags of the eyelids do not reappear.
When is blepharoplasty indicated?
As a general rule, the age of patients who undergo this operation exceeds 35 years, but there are also cases of younger people with a family tendency to the appearance of bags on the eyelids.
Some conditions of the patient's health increase the possible risks in this surgery, such as thyroid problems, insufficient tear production, high blood pressure, cardiovascular diseases and diabetes.
Likewise, glaucoma and retinal detachment may involve greater risks, a circumstance that makes it advisable to have an ophthalmological check-up before the operation.
Most frequent indication of this treatment:
- Accumulation of fat in the eyelids.
Do you have an aesthetic problem with your eyelids?

How is a blepharoplasty performed?
How is blepharoplasty surgery performed?
It is a relatively simple operation that lasts about two hours. It consists of making incisions in the skin of the eyelids in order to remove excess skin and muscle.
Then the fat that forms the bags is removed and finally the skin is sutured.
Once the blepharoplasty is finished, ointment and dressings with physiological serum are applied at low temperature to reduce discomfort and inflammation.
The operation is usually performed under local anesthesia, although if it is part of another operation, such as a facelift, general anesthesia is used.
