Antigen-specific sulphidoleukotriene production in allergy to beta-lactam antibiotics.

β–Lactam antibiotics are the most frequent cause of drug–induced allergic reactions. The diagnosis of these reactions is based on clinical manifestations, in vitro (serum specific IgE determination) and in vivo tests (skin test and challenge test).
Both kinds of tests have their disadvantages since serum specific IgE determination is not sensitive enough and the in vivo test could elicit serious adverse side–effects.
